It scares me when I see people who almost drowned able to pull themselves out of the water and hang onto a bouncing jetski. I was pulled out of the water once and thankfully it was into a boat, because I couldn't even curl my hands, much less lift or turn myself. And I thought I was fine. I would've kept on swimming. Eighteen year olds know everything!

Being drowned by the very person you are trying to rescue is such a real danger. Which is why when I learned a bit of rescue swimming last year, they also teach you different ways to break someone's hold on you and immobilize them for the rescue. They are so scared and panicked they won't listen, they'll just grab and pull on anything or *anyone* that might keep them afloat. Scary as fuck.

Yup, my little sister almost drowned me once. She was about 7 and I was about 17 or 18, she could swim a little. But tended to panic when her feet couldn't touch, so I told her she wasn't allowed out of the roped area of a hotel swimming pool. She didnt listen and swam up behind me panicking after I had told her a couple times to stop playing right next to the deep end drop off, I think she had accidentally swam under the rope and started freaking out. She grabbed me around the neck from behind and pulled my head completely under. Luckily she was smaller enough and I'm a good enough swimmer I didn't take any water in and forced her arms off my neck long enough to get upright and explain to her to hold my shoulders instead, that she would drown me too if she grabbed my neck, and how to kick her feet. Thank God I take after my dad and I stay pretty calm outwardly in emergencies, so she calmed down enough to follow instructions pretty quickly (inwardly I was terrified but tried to act like I was in control and she was safe). Once she stopped pulling me under, I could get my arms and legs in a position to swim to the poolside. There was nobody out there swimming with us and it can happen literally a foot or two from safety. All it takes is one panicked moment of someone yanking someone else's head backwards under the water. I have no doubt that if I were the type of person to panic, or even if I had just been caught a little more unaware and swallowed some water we might have both drowned.

I have actually experienced this not to long ago when I was about 8 (I’m 10 now) and it was the scariest moment of my life. I wasn’t to strong of a swimmer and so I was doggy paddling. Then two middle schools guys went under water grabbed my feet and pulled me down. I swallowed ALOT of water and I literally thought I was gonna die. I struggled to swim away but eventually I got out of the pool and ran to the bathroom. It was horrifying.

Happens all the time. The rescuer ends up drowning and the one who was been rescued survives. Throw something that they can grab. If you got nothing send your mate instead.

Tip that can save your life: when rescuing a drowning person, always approach them from the back, the likelihood of them pulling you under in a panicked grasp is smaller. However if you find yourself entangled and being submerged, do the opposite of what intuition would tell you: go under with them. The drowning person will let go and you can safely distance yourself. If there's no other choice, let them tire themselves out a bit before lending a helping hand. You can't underestimate the strength and lack of reason someone who thinks they're dying has.

As helpful as that sounds the guards have mentioned before that it sometimes makes things worse. Unless you're 100% sure that you can help without getting yourself in danger, you must alert the guards or look around for a surfer that can help. Proof is the guy that almost drowned by helping someone else.

Don't think the 3 people are stupid, when you're stuck in a rip you have to move perpendicular to the shoreline until you're out of it.
